Each job is different but a good starting point is 1 oz of compound to each gallon of water. Gradually reduce the amount of compound until the parts and media wont stay clean, then turn it up a little. The idea is to use the least amount of compound that you can. Start the solution flow at 1 gallon per cubic foot per hour, then adjust from there. Obviously, dirty, greasy parts are going to take more of each. Know your compound ph. Keep liquid compounds from freezing. Make sure safety equipment is available for the employees. Have your MSDS and hazardous labels displayed in case the feds drop in.

When burnishing aluminum parts and castings most people will be using acidic compounds and steel media while zinc parts might require alkaline compounds. Burnishing is finiky and sometimes you might have to try several different burnishing compounds to get the color you want with your water. Remember, when burnishing, your media must stay brilliant to make your parts look their best.

General deburring and cleaning of stamped steel parts can use a mild compound. Most likely on the alkaline side to provide some rust inhibiting. This is a very easy application and not neccessarily rocket science. Don't ever use a harsh compound on an easy application.

DEBURRING COMPOUNDS
PH 1%Water HardnessOz. per gal.Price per gal. 55 gal. drumsPrice per gal. 5 to 50 gal.

L-127
Our lowest cost, best selling deburring compound. Low foaming for general deburring and cleaning applications. Good cleaner, good inhibitor, excellent lubricity.

Cutting heavy grease or removing heavy cutting oils is probably going to require a very alkaline compound. These compounds give good rust protection as a side benefit, but be careful when handling them.

CLEANING AND DESCALING COMPOUNDS
PH 1%Water HardnessOz. per gal. Price per gal. 55 gal. drumsPrice per gal. 5 to 50 gal.

L-391
This general purpose cleaner is used with any media and formulated to clean heavy oil from parts and to aid deburring and burnishing in cleaning applications. Poor burnisher, excellent cleaner, good inhibitor, high foam.

10ALL 1/2-4$7.94$14.89

L-824
This highly alkaline compound is used as a heavy duty cleaner to remove tenacious oils and greases. This blend can also be used to descale in most descaling applications. Poor burnisher, excellent cleaner, poor inhibitor, fair tarnish removal, good heat treat removal, high foam.

11.70-251/2-4 $8.06$15.08

L-618
This highly alkaline compound is an excellent descaler and burnisher. It develops high luster, removes rust and inhibits ferrous metals. Excellent cleaner, good tarnish removal, good heat treat removal, high foam.

Rust inhibitors can be used as a dip or sprayed on as the parts come over the screen deck or even used as compound, either at the end of the cycle or for the whole run.

People in the ceramic coating industry are about the only ones still using dry powder compounds. I guess just because they started this way and nobody wants to try and reinvent the wheel.
